3 Tips on Keeping Your Jewelry Clean

Now if you are going to invest so heavily into jewelry you will definitely want to keep it clean and make sure that it remains safe. Here are a few important tips on how you can do this, quickly easily and without causing damage to your jewelry.

1. Use ammonia with warm water. This is a good way of cleaning any kinds of jewelry apart from Organic type like pearls. Simply wrap your jewelry into a piece of cloth and soak it in the water-ammonia solution for 3-5 minutes, after which take it out and clean out any grime that might be deposited at it and finally wipe it clean with a clean cloth.

2. If you do not have ammonia then you can also use a mild detergent in place.

3. If you have pearl based jewelry then be sure that you do not soak it into water for any solution for any length of time as pearls have a tendency to dissolve. Instead just clean then with a damp cloth to bring back their luster.

These tips apply to gemstones as much as they do to precious metals. Be careful when you are cleaning your jewelry. Do not wash them anywhere near a sink; you do not want to loose them in the drain! Also make sure the brush you use to clean your jewelry with is non-metallic and soft bristled; you do not want to leave scratches all over your gemstone. While some stones such as diamonds and sapphires are very resistant to scratching others such as opal and Peridot are not.
